Some important dates: Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski is a native of Gdansk, Poland. He received his M.Sc. degree in Sound Engineering from the Gdansk University of Technology in 1982, his Ph.D. degree in 1987 and his D.Sc. degree in 1992 from the Cracov Academy of Mining and Metallurgy. Prof. Czyzewski joined the staff of the Sound Engineering Department of the Gdansk University of Technology in 1984. In December 1999 Mr. President of Poland granted him the title of Professor. In 2002 the Senate of his University approved him to the position of Full Professor.

Professional interests: multimedia technology with focus on interactive & intelligent multimedia applications; digital signal processing with focus on soft computing algorithms (neural networks, fuzzy logic and rough sets.); digital studio recording technology (sound & vision); biometric technology; biomedical engineering with focus on telemedicine and applications to hearing, speech & vision; database technology with focus to intelligent data query; geographical information systems with focus to environment monitoring; military computer systems with focus to air force applications; homeland security systems and applications.

Implemented projects: As a researcher, he and his team of research engineers designed a number of digital devices; several of which were subsequently produced commercially in Poland. The main projects under Prof. Czyzewski's guidance concerned digital studio devices, computerized telephone systems, polyphonic organ synthesizers, signalization systems for the visually impaired, electronic speech aids, hearing and noise testing devices and others. He led a number (more than 30) of research projects sponsored by the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research or by the National Centre for Research and Development - NCBIR and 5 European projects (FP6 & FP7) as a partner team leader. The subjects of the mentioned projects concern new methods of speech recognition, audio restoration, waveguide sound synthesis, digital processing algorithms for hearing aids and cochlear implants, interactive telemedicine systems for screening testing of hearing, speech & vision, digital speech prostheses, beamformers, anti-noise filters, speech communication system for military aircraft pilots, environmental noise monitoring systems, intelligent surveillance systems, multimodal computer interfaces and others.

Publications: Author or co-author of approx. 500 research papers published in international journals and presented in congresses & conferences around the World. In 1991, Prof. Czyzewski published a monograph devoted to digital audio operations, in 1998 he published in Poland his book entitled "Digital Sound" which won him the Prize of Ministry of Education of Poland. In September 2002 the book was issued co-authored by him entitled: "Computer technology for audiology, phoniatry and speech therapy". He is also author of 10 Polish patents in the domain of computer science and 5 international patent applications in the domain of telemedicine and computer technology. See list of publications.

Current professional position: Head of the Multimedia Systems Department of Gdańsk University of Technology; V-ce Director and Director of the Doctoral Studies (1994-2007) at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications & Informatics. In 1991 Prof. Czyzewski helped to establish the Polish Section of the Audio Engineering Society and was elected Secretary of this new section, then he acted as a Committee member of this Section. For 15 years he was also a member of the Acoustic Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and he is also a member of: IEEE, International Rough Set Society, International Fluency Assoc. He acts also as a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Physiology & Pathology of Hearing in Warsaw. In 2005 he acted as Director of the Center for Advanced Technologies "Pomerania". He was also elected the Member of the Board of the Polish Platform for Internal Security and Safety. He also runs his own business enterprise called BALTRONIC.

Prizes: In 2000 Mr. Prime Minister of Poland presented him his First Prize for achievements in technical sciences. In the years 2000-2002 some of projects guided by prof. Czyzewski were nominated to the Stockholm Challenge Award, to the Europrix 2000 prize (Europe's Best in Multimedia), were distinguished by the Polish Business Club, awarded gold and silver medals on the international invention exhibitions and represented Poland at various European IST (Information Society Technology) events also outside Europe. The Audio Engineering Society presented him its Fellowship for "outstanding achievements in soft computing applications". In 2001 the Foundation for Polish Science distinguished him by its prestigious Scholar Grant. In 2002 he was awarded the Bachelor Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order. In 2003 the Multimedia Systems Department supervised by prof. Czyzewski was awarded with the highest prize of the Ministry of Science (so called "Oscar of Polish Science") in the category of information technologies. In 2005 he was awarded with the Sendzimir medal of honor for his achievements in making inventions. Prof. Czyzewski is the lauerate of the Hevelius Scientific Prize of Gdansk, presented him at the beginning of 2007 by the President of Gdansk, Mr. P. Adamowicz on the basis of the decision of the Scientific Society of Gdansk. In 2010 he and his team of scientists were awarded the Prize of Minister of Science and Higher Education for their achievements in implementation of innovative human computer interfaces (http://www.multimed.biz/).
