The the first night all the used microphone techniques were set up, the second night was the recording night. The studio was adapted acoustically by setting screens. The goal was to reach compromise between satisfactory instruments separation and getting a natural sound image. The quartet consisted of an accordion, violin, piano and double-bass.

Used microphone techniques:

- OCT (front system) + IRT Cross (rear system)
- Corey / Martin Tree
- INA-5
- Double M-S

During the mixing process OCT+IRT Cross microphone technique was used because of its clear sound image and wide panorama.

During recording supporting microphones were used as well. Equipment used to rekord:
- console: SSL MT+ - studio monitors: Genelec 1038 A – 5.1 - recording: ProTools HD2 v. 7.1 (Power Mac G5) - Lexicon 960 LD
First thing that was made during the miting process was mentioned above choosing the microphone technique and setting it in the surround panorama. Next, with the use of appropriate additional supporting microphones, a required balance between the instruments was achieved and sound planes created. All the word on the mix and mastering was made in room 728 od the Multimedia Departament.

The experimental 5.1 recordnig, including recording techniques review, was the diploma subject. One of the diploma element was carrying out subjective hearing tests, related with surround sound perception.

The recording submitted and entered the Students Recording Competition, which took place at the 122nd Audio Engineering Society Convention in Vienna, where it got the 3rd place in “surround non-classical” category.
